What to see in Civitavecchia as soon as you arrive with your cruise ship: the port
The Civitavecchia port is a very important historical site as you can see from the monuments that are inside it: the Antemurale, the Rocca, the Vanvitelli Fountain representing the head of an old faun, Porta Livorno – a huge monumental passage built with the aim to connect the port with the north side of the town – the Lazzaretto tower and Fort Michelangelo. The massive Fort Michelangelo was first commissioned by Pope Julius II to defend the port of Rome. The upper part of the “maschio” tower was designed by Michelangelo. It is one of the most important military architectonical structures of the coastline of Lazio.
What to see in Civitavecchia town: the old historic city centre
The old historic city centre is well preserved despite many historical monuments were destroyed during the Second World War. Among the religious monuments you can visit the Cathedral and the Chiesa della Morte, the most ancient church in the town. The historic centre is surrounded by the massive medieval walls commissioned by Pope Urbano VIII through which there is the Archetto that was the old entrance of the town.
What to see in Civitavecchia if you want to take a walk: the Marina
The Marina of Civitavecchia is a wide promenade which starts from the seafront section of Fort Michelangelo, through Viale Garibaldi ends at Pirgo seaside establishment. Pirgo takes his name after the ancient people of Pyrgi, who lived along the Lazio coastline before the Romans. The original Marina complex was formed by a platform with jetties and Swiss chalet style buildings. Damaged by the war and rough seas, it was rebuilt in 1997 in a new modern structure. From the Pirgo terrace you can admire the whole seafront of Civitavecchia.
What to see around Civitavecchia: Terme Taurine and Ficoncella baths
Terme Taurine is an Etruscan archeological site up on a hill surrounded by trees, at about 5 km from the centre of Civitavecchia. Its name derives from the ancient lake “Acquae Tauri” from which originated the spring. Next to them there is the thermal complex of the Ficoncella Baths, which take its name after a fig tree that is in the area under which visitors can relax. The baths still have their ancient stone pools located in an open air area from which you can see the valleys and the sea on one side and the Monti della Tolfa on the other one.
